Andy's Smelt
Andy's Smelt
An obscure but very good smelt streamer.
Clos 'Nuf
Clos 'Nuf
Master Maine Guide Fern Bosse's killer pattern. I like this one a lot, folks, it's fast becoming one of my favorites!
Clouser Smelt
Clouser Smelt
Olive/Gray/White with Pearl and Purple flash and Gold eyes to get it down in those higher spring flows. #4-6
Earl's Grey Smelt
Earl's Grey Smelt
If I was limited to just one smelt pattern for spring fishing, well, that wouldn't be any fun! However, this pattern would probably be it. You should see it when it gets wet and slicked down, it looks just like the real thing! #2-8 9xl hook, $3.75
Jim's Smelt
Jim's Smelt
Created by Jim Bernstein. The next time you're near Eldridge Brother's Fly Shop in Cape Neddick, ME stop in and get one directly from the source! #2-8 9xl hook, $3.75
Magog Smelt
Magog Smelt
Marabou Smelt
Marabou Smelt
Smelts on the West Branch have a bluish sheen to them and this streamer replicates that very well.
Peek-A-Boo Smelt
Peek-A-Boo Smelt
Another one of mine I used to keep close to the vest. I called it the "Peek-a-Boo" because it doesn't have anything on underneath and flashes in the water. And if I could find a way to paint the eye winking I would! #4-8 9xl hook
Ripogenus Smelt
Ripogenus Smelt
Eddie Reif's classic smelt pattern for the Penobscot West Branch. #2-8 9xl hook, $3.75
Skinny Minnie
Skinny Minnie
I designed this streamer about 10 years ago when I started buying feathers in bulk as a way to put to use all of the really slender saddles that fish like but that don't really look all that fantastic on a fly. It's a bit like those flatwing striper flies action-wise and has been very consistent for me in the springtime for salmon. I've decided to finally let the cat out of the bag and put it out there instead of playing "I've got a secret" any longer. A size #6 8xl is generally what I fish but it works from tandems to #8's.
Stout's Floating Smelt
Stout's Floating Smelt
Designed by Ray Stout. It's also referred to as the West Branch Dry Fly and essentially the only foam fly I tie or use. Tied on a #4 hook and approximately 2 3/4" long. $4.50
Winnipesaukee Smelt
Winnipesaukee Smelt
New Hampshire pioneer Jim Warner's outstanding streamer. A staple smelt pattern for me and lots of other successful fishermen since 1957. My favorite smelt streamers favor marabou for the wings which Jim incorporated into and helped to popularize in his famous original patterns. #2-8 9xl hook, $3.75
