FISHING REPORT:

6/11/18

CADDIS ARE NOW IN FULL SWING BUT WITH THE DECREASE IN WATER FLOW AND THE EXPONENTIAL INCREASE IN FISHING PRESSURE THE FISH HAVE BECOME WELL EDUCATED.  YOU WILL NEED TO SWITCH TO SMALLER PATTERNS FOR CONSISTENT SUCCESS.  A #12 ELK HAIR CADDIS ISN'T LIKELY TO CUT IT FOR YOU.  HENDRICKSONS ARE OVER BUT YOU STILL MIGHT BE ABLE TO MOVE AN OCCASIONAL FISH TO A RED QUILL.

5/29/18

THE HENDRICKSONS ARE GOING FULL-TILT RIGHT NOW BUT ARE NOT DRAWING A LOT OF RISES UNTIL THE EVENING SPINNER FALLS WHEN THERE CAN BE SOME SPORADIC ACTION.  SUB-SURFACE NYMPHS AND SOFT HACKLE PATTERNS ARE STILL YOUR BEST BET FOR CONSISTENT ACTION.  ANT PATTERNS IN THE DAM POOL WILL ALSO PULL IN THE OCCASIONAL FISH.

5/21/18

THE WATER FLOW HAS GONE UP A BIT BUT IS STILL WADING-FRIENDLY.  AND, YES, THERE ARE HENDRICKSONS.

5/11/18

FISHING HAS DEFINITELY PICKED UP.  THERE ARE SOME SPORADIC RISES TO THE OCCASIONAL LITTLE BLACK STONE FLIES THAT NOW OUT AND ABOUT.  IT'S NOT CONSISTENT BUT YOU CAN ACTUALLY GET THE OCCASIONAL FISH TO TAKE ON TOP.  FLOATING SMELTS ARE PRODUCING ACTION IN THE DAM POOL AND THE BARNES SPECIAL IS A VERY HOT FLY RIGHT NOW

5/10/18

THE WATER LEVEL FOR THE STREAM HAS BEEN BROUGHT DOWN DRAMATICALLY AND IT IS DECENT WADING.  THERE ARE FISH THROUGHOUT THE RIVER NOW AND STREAMERS LIKE THE OLD RELIABLE BARNES SPECIAL AS WELL AS NYMPHS ARE TAKING FISH.  WITH THE PREDICTED WEATHER FORECAST THIS SHOULD BE AN EXCELLENT WEEKEND FOR FISHING!

5/6/18

THE WATER LEVEL IN THE STREAM IS STARTING TO DROP WHICH IS A GOOD THING!  THE HIGHER FLOWS SHOULD HAVE HELPED PULL FISH INTO THE RIVER AND ONCE IT REACHES A WADABLE LEVEL WE SHOULD HAVE SOME GOOD FISHING AT LAST!
ON THE LAKE PEOPLE ARE NOW TROLLING AND GETTING INTO FISH.  JOE'S SMELTS, PHANTOM SMELTS, SKINNY MINNIES, AND DOBSIS GHOSTS ARE SOME GOOD FLIES THAT ARE GETTING ACTION.  IF YOU HAVE A BOAT GET OUT THERE!

4/29/18

THE STREAM RIGHT NOW IS BASICALLY UN-FISHABLE DUE TO THE HIGH WATER FLOW AS WEST GRAND IS DRAWN DOWN.  WEST GRAND ITSELF IS NEARING 50% ICE FREE AND SOME PEOPLE ARE NOW OUT TROLLING.  ICE STILL REMAINS ON THE EAST END.  THIS COMING WEEK AND WEATHER SHOULD BRING GOOD ACTION OUT ON THE LAKES THAT ARE OPEN.  OTHER LOCAL AREAS ARE NOW SEEING THE BASS TURN ON IN A MAJOR FASHION.  A VERY TRUSTWORTHY SOURCE JUST HAD A 40+ FISH DAY WITH THE LARGEST TAKEN BEING A NEARLY 6LB LARGEMOUTH BASS.  RIGHT NOW THAT'S GOING TO BE  YOUR BEST BET IF YOU FISH FOR THEM.

4/24/18

THE FISHING HAS BEEN VERY SLOW LATELY, I CAME UP WITH A BIG FAT DONUT TODAY AND THE GUY I WAS WITH ONLY TOOK 1 FISH.  THERE WAS ALSO A LARGE GROUP OF GUYS FISHING TODAY AND BETWEEN THE 7 OF THEM THEY ONLY HAD 1 FISH AS WELL.  SADLY, AS OF LATE THIS HAS BEEN THE STANDARD.  I WOULD BE LYING TO YOU IF I TOLD YOU IT WASN'T DIFFICULT FISHING.  THE WATER LEVEL IS HIGH BUT STILL VERY FISHABLE AND WADABLE.  HERE'S A SHOT OF THE WATER BELOW THE HATCHERY SO YOU CAN SEE FOR YOURSELF:

HOWEVER, THE WATER TEMPERATURE IS CREEPING UP AND WAS 41 DEGREES TODAY, 42.5 OVER AT BIG LAKE.  THAT'S ALMOST AT THE MAGICAL TEMPERATURE RANGE WHEN SMELT SPAWN - 42-47 DEGREES.  I'M HOPEFUL THE SALMON WILL START TO GET MOVING OVER THIS NEXT WEEK AND THAT THINGS WILL START TO IMPROVE.

4/12/18

WATER LEVELS ARE COMING DOWN AND THE RIVER IS VERY FISH-ABLE ALTHOUGH THE AVERAGE SEEMS TO BE ABOUT 1 FISH PER ANGLER EVERY 2-3 HOURS OF FISHING.  EACH SALMON RIGHT NOW WILL BE HARD WON.
WATER TEMPERATURE IS USUALLY AROUND 35 DEGREES FIRST THING IN THE MORNING AFTER FREEZING/LOW TEMPS AT NIGHT BUT WILL WARM UP DURING THE PEAK OF THE SUN BY A COUPLE OF DEGREES WHICH WILL USUALLY BE YOUR BEST CHANCE AT FEEDING FISH.  WOOLY BUGGERS AND GOLDEN RETRIEVERS (MAYBE EVEN WITH BIT OF PINK IN THERE!) ARE STILL THE BEST BET BUT SMELT STREAMERS SHOULD START PRODUCING BETTER IN A WEEK OR TWO AS WATER TEMPERATURES HEAD NORTH OF 40 DEGREES.
I AM GOING ON VACATION UNTIL THE 21ST SO THERE WILL BE NO FURTHER UPDATES UNTIL THEN- BE SAFE AND HAVE A GREAT TIME ON THE WATER!

4/8/18

WATER TEMPERATURE HAS COME UP A FEW DEGREES WHICH SHOULD HELP WITH GETTING A LITTLE MORE ACTIVITY FROM THE SALMON.  WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO VERIFY IT SOMEONE REPORTED HAVING A 17 FISH DAY FRIDAY WHICH IS EXCEPTIONAL AT THIS TIME OF YEAR.  THE INCREASE IN WATER TEMP WOULD BE LARGEST FACTOR AS EVEN A 1 DEGREE INCREASE WHEN THE SUN STARTS SHINING AT THIS TIME OF YEAR WILL TRIGGER FEEDING ACTIVITY.  YOUR BEST SHOT RIGHT NOW WILL BE THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY AS THE SUN COMING OUT HELPS WARM THE WATER UP.

4/5/18

WATER AND AIR TEMPERATURES ARE STILL VERY COLD AND AS WOULD BE EXPECTED THE FISHING IS SLOW.  FISHING IS NOT LIKELY TO PICK UP FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER COUPLE OF WEEKS AS IT'S SPRING ONLY BY THE CALENDAR DATE!  I DON'T THINK ANYONE WAS SEEN YESTERDAY WITH THE POOR WEATHER(RAIN/SLEET, COLD TEMPS, WIND) BUT DESPITE SOME LIGHT FLURRIES AND THE TEMPERATURE AT 18 DEGREES THIS MORNING, I SAW A GROUP OF ABOUT 8 ANGLERS BRACING THEMSELVES TO HIT THE DAM POOL.  HERE'S HOPING YOU GUYS HAD SOME LUCK!
HERE'S A VERY COOL PICTURE TAKEN THE OTHER DAY OF AN UNDERWATER VIEW OF A SALMON BEING RELEASED, THE FISH IS TAKING OFF ON THE LEFT OF THE PIC:

4/2/18

FISHING ACTION IS STILL THE SAME.  BOUNCING GOLDEN RETRIEVERS OR CONEHEAD WOOLY BUGGERS ALONG THE BOTTOM IS THE MOST PRODUCTIVE TACTIC AT THE MOMENT.  CAST UPSTREAM, LET IT SINK TO THE BOTTOM, AND AS THE FLY DRIFTS BELOW YOUR POSITION THE FISH WILL GENERALLY TAKE AS YOU BEGIN TO STRIP SLOWLY.

4/2/18

THERE ARE DEFINITELY FISH TO BE HAD IF YOU GET YOUR FLY ON THE BOTTOM.  THE CURRENT MANTRA IS "GO DEEP OR GO HOME!"  SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE HAVING GOOD ACTION TODAY.
A #8 GOLDEN RETRIEVER IS PROBABLY THE MOST CONSISTENT FLY AT THE MOMENT ACCORDING TO THE PEOPLE I SPOKE TO THAT FISHED THE STREAM.  A #4 CONE HEAD VERSION DIDN'T WORK BUT WHEN SWITCHED UP WITH A #8 ALL OF A SUDDEN THE DINNER BELL GOT RUNG.  I WILL BE THERE WEDNESDAY TO PUT IT TO THE TEST.

ON A SERIOUS NOTE, LET'S TALK STREAM SAFETYUSE A WADING STAFF AND DON'T WADE OR FISH ALONE, THE WATER TEMPERATURE AND FLOW AT THIS TIME OF YEAR IS NO JOKE AND IF YOU STUMBLE AND TAKE A SWIM IT HAS A VERY REAL POSSIBILITY OF ENDING BADLY.  THIS ISN'T THE TIME OF THE SEASON FOR MARATHON FISHING EITHER, EVEN WITH HEAVY LAYERING THE COLD WATER TEMPS WILL LEECH YOUR BODY HEAT EXTREMELY QUICKLY AND CAN PUT YOU AT RISK FOR HYPOTHERMIA. TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS OR HEAD TO THE PINE TREE STORE FOR SOMETHING HOT TO WARM UP WITH.  ONCE YOU DO THEN GO BACK FOR ROUND TWO, THREE, OR FOUR!

HERE'S SOME PICS OF TODAY'S FISH:

BRIAN WITH HIS FIRST GLS SALMON, NICE JOB!

FRANK CLAIMS THIS ONE WAS 20" AND IS BEING ROBBED BY THE PHOTO.  ALTHOUGH HE'S A PRETTY BROAD GUY IT'S A BIT SUSPECT TO ME...JUST KIDDING!  I'D TAKE IT ANY DAY!

4/1/18

AS USUAL AND DESPITE FALLING ON EASTER SUNDAY, OPENING DAY WAS BUSY WITH ANGLERS FILLING THE DAM POOL DESPERATE TO WET A LINE AFTER A VERY LONG WINTER.  SOME ENTERPRISING SOULS USED WATERCRAFT TO ACCESS THE MIDDLE OF THE POOL OUT OF REACH OF WADERS WITH EXCELLENT RESULTS.  FISHING STARTED OFF A BIT SLOW BUT PICKED UP WITH A MIX OF SMALLER AND LARGER SIZED FISH TAKEN.  FISH ARE MOSTLY HUGGING THE BOTTOM AT THIS TIME OF YEAR SO A FAST SINKING LINE OR SINK TIP, OR WEIGHTED FLIES ARE GOING TO GIVE YOU YOUR BEST CHANCES OF PUTTING FISH ONTO THE END OF YOUR LINE.
